Privacy Policy

Revised 2026-03-29

1. Introduction

This privacy policy governs your use of the software application Grit ('Application') that was created by OpenLongTrails.org ('OLT', 'we', 'us', or 'our') for mobile devices. The Application is designed to aid hikers on specific trails by providing a list of waypoints, basic navigational information, and crowdsourced information about trail conditions.

You agree to this Privacy Policy, in its entirety, by accessing the Application. If you do not agree to these terms, you should not access, install, or otherwise make use of the Application.

2. What information does the Application obtain and how is it used?

2A. User Provided Information

The Application obtains the information you provide when you download and register the Application. If you do not want to register, you may have the option of using the app without creating an account.

The Application also provides several mechanisms for users to contribute information, such as waypoint comments, waypoint suggestions, and feedback.

When you register with us and use the Application, you generally provide (a) your email address, screen name, password, and other registration information; (b) information you provide us when you contact us for help; and (c) information you enter into our system when using the Application, such as waypoint comments.

We may also use the information you provided us to contact you from time to time to provide you with important information, required notices, and updates about OpenLongTrails.

2B. Automatically Collected Information

The Application may collect certain information automatically, including, but not limited to, the type of mobile device you use, your mobile operating system version, the IP address of your mobile device, and information about the way you use the Application.

GPS location information is used by the Application to show your position on the trail map. This location data is processed on your device and is not transmitted to OpenLongTrails.org servers. If you submit a waypoint suggestion, the coordinates you provide are sent to the server as part of that submission.

When you accept policies within the Application (such as the Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, or Safety Disclaimer), we record the policy version accepted, the date and time of acceptance, a persistent anonymous device identifier, and basic device information (operating system and app version). Your IP address is recorded by the server at the time of transmission. If you are logged in, this information is associated with your account. This information is used to maintain a record of your policy acceptance.

The Application uses Sentry, a third party error reporting service, to collect crash reports and diagnostic information. This may include device type, operating system version, app version, and technical details about the error. This information is used solely to identify and fix bugs in the Application. You can enable or disable crash reporting at any time from the Settings screen in the Application.

When you access Grit's cloud servers, such as when syncing trail data, we may log personally identifiable information, such as your IP address and the type of data accessed.

3. Does the Application collect precise real time location information of the device?

The Application uses GPS technology (or similar technology) to determine your current location and display it on the trail map. This location data is processed on your device and is not shared with OpenLongTrails.org, other users, or partners.

4. Do third parties see and/or have access to information obtained by the Application?

Yes. We will share your information with third parties only in the ways that are described in this privacy statement.

We may disclose User Provided and Automatically Collected Information:

We may share aggregated and/or anonymized non-personal information outside of OpenLongTrails.org, for example to improve the accuracy of trail routing on third party services such as OpenStreetMap.

In circumstances not covered above, we may share your information as disclosed to you at the time of collection.

We do not sell personal or sensitive user data.

5. External Content

The Application may include links to external content on third party services. Such services may be governed by different privacy policies. OpenLongTrails.org cannot be responsible for the content on such services.

6. What are my opt-out rights?

You can stop all collection of information by the Application easily by uninstalling the Application. You may use the standard uninstall processes provided as part of your mobile device or via the mobile application marketplace or network. You may request deletion of your account, and all data associated with your account.

7. Data Retention Policy, Managing Your Information

Crowdsourced information is a central feature of the Application, and some User Provided data, including but not limited to waypoint comments and waypoint suggestions, may be retained indefinitely. We will retain other User Provided data for as long as you use the Application and for a reasonable time thereafter. Automatically Collected information such as server logs and crash reports may be retained indefinitely. If you'd like for us to delete User Provided Data that you have provided via the Application, please contact us at [email protected] and we will respond in a reasonable period of time. Please note that retention of some or all of the User Provided Data may be required for compliance purposes and/or in order for the Application to function properly.

8. Children

We do not use the Application to knowingly solicit data from or market to children under the age of 13. If a parent or guardian becomes aware that his or her child has provided us with information without their consent, the parent should contact us at [email protected]. We will delete such information from our files within a reasonable period of time.

9. Security

We are concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. We provide physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect information we process and maintain. For example, we limit access to this information to authorized individuals and contractors who need to know that information in order to operate, develop or improve our Application. User data is handled according to modern security best practices and transmitted using HTTPS. Please be aware that, although we endeavor to provide reasonable security for information we process and maintain, no security system can prevent all potential security breaches.

10. Changes

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. You are advised to consult this Privacy Policy regularly for any changes, as continued use is deemed approval of all changes. We will notify you of any revisions to this Privacy Policy by posting the new Privacy Policy from https://openlongtrails.org/about and/or by any other reasonable means of notice acceptable under applicable state and federal law. If we make a material change to the way we use personally identifiable information, we will provide notice to users via email.

11. Your Consent

By using the Application, you are consenting to our processing of your information as set forth in this Privacy Policy now and as amended by us. 'Processing' means accessing, collecting, storing, deleting, using, combining, and disclosing information in any way. User information will be transferred, processed and stored under United States privacy standards.

12. Contact us

If you have any questions regarding privacy while using the Application, or have questions about our practices, please contact us via email at [email protected].
